Events & Activities 2010

The Canals for the Community project, funded through the Big Lottery Fund, aims to make the canals of Stoke-on-Trent a more vibrant and desirable place for the community to use for leisure and recreation. Please see below for further information on forthcoming events and activities.

Friday 18th Canal Clean Team

Westport Lake
Meet at car park

10:30am - 3:30pm

Help make a difference to your local canal by joining the Canal Clean Team. We plan to do some weeding outside the visitor centre with a view to seeding a bit later on. Note this is a longer than usual day, but if you can only turn up for a short time you are still very welcome. Hot & cold drinks and lunch will be provided on this occasion. Please wear old clothes. If you can provide a rake or spade, it would be helpful as we only have a small supply.

Friday 30th A walk around Longport, canal port of the Potteries

Meet at the side of the Packhorse Inn, next to the bridge over the Trent & Mersey Canal

2.00pm - 4.00pm

Join Andrew Dobraszczyc on this FREE 2 hour history walk and take a look at some of the wharfs, warehouses, pottery factories, flour mill and lime kiln built next to the Trent & Mersey Canal at Middleport.

Friday 28th Bat walk

9pm

Join Staffordshire Bat Group for a FREE guided walk around Westport Lake and discover these amazing creatures. Sensible footwear, warm clothes and a torch are advisable.

Step onboard ‘Swift’, the historic working canal boat, dressed in traditional canal clothing.

Bring your camera and capture the whole family dressed as Victorian canal boaters, listen to our atmospheric live musician play alongside the wharf at The Jesse Shirley Bone and Flint Mill.

Thursday 8th Easter Family Event

Bring your teddy and step onboard ‘Swift’ the historic working canal boat. Free family admission to the museum with every teddy bear.

Try out a new fun activity drawing sound maps and taking sound walks along the canal. Explore the canal with your ears rather than your eyes.
