A busy day at Cheddleton
This guide to the Caldon Canal is split into sections. Please select a section from the list above.
Much of the canal is close to bus routes, which may be of use to walkers.
The main hub for bus services in the area is Hanley Bus Station. From there you can catch the number 18 or 118 to Stockton Brook, Endon and Leek. Other useful services from Hanley include:
3: Baddeley Green, close to Stockton Brook locks via Milton
16: Cheddleton and Leek (the long way around!)
32 and 32a Kingsley Holt - Cheadle
58: Etruria
Clowes Coaches run services 234, 235 and 236 between Leek and Cheadle via Kingsley Holt, Froghall and Ipstones. Each of the three services operate different routes and infrequent times between Kingsley Holt and Ipstones but together give between a one and half to two hour service through the day.
Between Cheddleton and Froghall the canal passes through very rural areas which are not serviced by buses but you can catch a steam train at Froghall, Consall or Cheddleton! The Churnet Valley Railway website has further details.
Most local bus timetables may be found on the First Group website for Staffordshire. The 118 is operated by D&G Coach and Bus on contract to Stoke-on-Trent Council who also have a bus information website. Another useful site for the whole area (including the Clowes services in the Froghall) area is Traveline.
