24/1/2007 Uttoxeter Canal Receives £2,660 Boost From Stafford Boat Club
At a presentation ceremony at the Stafford Boat Club the Uttoxeter Canal Restoration Committee Chairman Mike Maryon received £2,660 pounds from the commodore of the Stafford Boat Club, John Mountfort. The Uttoxeter Canal Restoration was the club’s chosen charity for the year after some members of the club heard a presentation about the efforts to restore the canal at a lecture given in Checkley Village Hall early last year. The Uttoxeter Restoration Committee Chairman, Staffordshire County Councillor for Cheadle & Checkley, Mike Maryon said, “We are indebted to the Stafford Boat Club who has raised this amazing amount of money for us. When a club member suggested that he was going to propose that we were selected as their Charity of the year I had no idea that we would be collecting such an exceptional amount of money for our funds. I would also like to pay a particular thank you to Irene Craven who raised money by running a half marathon, as well as organising a ‘Butterfly Ball’ at the Club and raised £660 pounds of the total amount. This was a fantastic solo effort and deserves special recognition.” Mike went on to say, “This money comes at a critical time for us as we are discussing with the local Councils (Staffordshire County Council / Staffordshire Moorlands District Council / East Staffordshire Borough Council) the possible opportunities that regeneration could bring to the 13 mile stretch of Staffordshire Canal that runs from Froghall via Oakamore, Alton, Denstone, and Rocester through to Uttoxeter. This extra funding will help us make another step in the Trust’s progression towards re-establishing the former glory of this canal and making people aware of the great benefits that this scheme could bring to the local community.” Stafford Boat Club Commodore John Mountfort said, “We are a small boat club with about 120 family members all enthusiastic about the canal system, especially those in our own County of Staffordshire. This commitment and passion can be summed up by the amount of money that we have raised for the Uttoxeter Canal and I am proud of our members for doing that.”
