The canal clean-up and Towpath Tidy in Stoke-on-Trent is now under way. Volunteer groups from the local area met with Steve Bicknell and his team from British Waterways at Etruria Industrial Museum on Thursday morning and set to work.
On
day one of the clean-up has foccussed on three areas across the city:
Teams of volunteers have been working in small groups on the Caldon Canal painting fences and various structures in the Shelton and Etruria areas.
Our first picture shows a team from British Waterways and The Furniture Mine painting a fence which had previously been badly marked with graffiti, near to Planet Lock in Shelton. The Furniture Mine is a charitable organisation that makes use of unwanted household items and passes them on to those in need in your community. We thank them for becoming involved in this project. Please support them if you can.
A team from British Waterways are working south from Harecastle Tunnel towards Etruria, clearing vegetation and rubbish on the offside of the canal.
CSB Environmental have been using specialist equiment on bridges and walls to remove graffitti. £15,000 has been committed by British Waterways to clean up an area from Etruria Junction to bridge 8 on the Caldon Canal and between Bridges 114 and 119 on the Trent & Mersey Canal. The image below shows the CSB team working in Hanley Park on Thursday afternoon.
As work progresses over the four days we will update this site with the latest news and pictures.
