Caldon Canal Clean-up!
Wales & Border Counties Waterways, Towpath Tidy 2009
19th, 20th, 21st & 22nd March, Stoke on Trent
The second day of the canal clean-up and Towpath Tidy in Stoke-on-Trent has seen further improvements made to our local waterways. Volunteer groups from the local area have again ben working with teams from British Waterways and Stoke-on-Trent City council on various sites.
The
focus today has been on rubbish removal from the canal and its offside in
several areas; painting in the Etruria and Shelton areas; and graffiti prevention
in Stoke.
At Glebe Steet bridge in Stoke, major works have been carried out over several months to the bridge and the towpath edge. As the final part of this project, contractors have been applying anti-graffiti paint to the bridge and surrounding areas. Our photo shows one of the team from CLM Construction working on the bridge sides.
A team of four from British Waterways and Stoke-on-Trent City Council took their work boat Grayling from Etruria Junction down to the Britannia Stadium and back, collecting rubbish and overgrowth from the canal and the offside bank.
Among their catch, a television, plastic drums and the inevitable bicycle. The rubbish is being brought back to the BW Yard at Etruria for disposal. Our photo shows one of the team manoeuvring the boat so that his colleague can lift a large branch out of the canal in the Etruria area.

Our final two pictures show a drum being removed from the offside of the canal and the ever-growing pile of rubbish at BWs Etruria Maintenance Yard. Note the other old favourite, a settee!

As work progresses over the four days we will update this site with the latest news and pictures.
If you would like to be involved in the Canal Clean-up, you can just turn up at Etruria Industrial Museum between today and Sunday, at 10am each day. Please note that there is limited parking in this area as the Museum is not open at present.
