Caldon Canal Clean-up!
Wales & Border Counties Waterways, Towpath Tidy 2009
19th, 20th, 21st & 22nd March, Stoke on Trent
On the third day of the canal clean-up and Towpath Tidy in Stoke-on-Trent attention turned to the Festival Park area where volunteers and the team from British Waterways worked on overhanging vegetation and rubbish collection. Meanwhile on the Caldon Canal, Towpath Tidy organiser Steve Bicknell led the painting team finishing off tasks started on the two previous days.
Our first two photos show two of the team tidying up the bank at Festival Park, as well as the first few bags of rubbish collected in the morning.

Meanwhile, two of the team from British Waterways were concentrating on overhanging branches on the offside of the canal. Using a range of tools including a chainsaw and chipper they made rapid progress along the bank. This work will continue after the canal clean-up weekend as the team complete the cutting back of offside vegetation between Harecastle tunnel and Etruria Junction.
Our second photo shows the team at work. Note that the workboat stove was lit today, the weather having turned noticeably colder compared to the two previous days of the clean-up!

If you would like to be involved in the Canal Clean-up, you can just turn up for the final day at Etruria Industrial Museum at 10am on Sunday. Please note that there is limited parking in this area as the Museum is not open at present.
