Leek Branch partly re-opened

We have been advised by British Waterways that the Leek Branch has been reopened as far as Leek Tunnel, but the section beyond the tunnel will remain closed until 5th July

:

BW and their Contractor May Gurney have now successfully completed the essential repair works to Hollinhay Embankment and the canal navigation and towpath are now open to customers up to Leek Tunnel.

It has been identified that the breach site requires a more extensive clay liner to the channel than originally planned. This additional work will require the canal to be closed for a further 3 weeks until 5th July 2010. For safety reasons the canal towpath along this length will continue to be closed whilst repair works are carried out. A signed diversion route will be available for pedestrians.

Boaters are now able to wind at Leek Tunnel. Towpath users are advised to adhere to the local signage for the diversion route.

Please note that in order to ensure continuity of water supply to the summit pound of the Caldon Canal, over pumping has been installed at the breach site; to allow water from Rudyard Reservoir to be used.
